When the catalog stops at the size you need, we design and source the tool that doesn’t exist yet — special diameters and lengths, custom geometry, step drills and form tools. Send a print or describe the job.

Every shop has the part that fights back. A pocket whose corner radius doesn’t match any standard end mill. A bore that needs three operations because no single tool covers the steps. A feature buried deep enough that a standard-reach cutter chatters before it gets there. The usual response is to work around it — more setups, slower feeds, an extra tool change — and to keep paying that cost every time the job runs.

A special tool is how you stop paying it. It is not exotic and it is not only for aerospace: most specials we quote are modest departures from a standard tool, aimed at collapsing two operations into one or holding a feature that a stock cutter can’t.

What we build

Special diameters

Sizes between the standard fractional and metric steps, and tools ground to a target dimension rather than a catalog nominal — for slots, bores and fits that have to land on a number.

Special lengths & reach

Extended reach, extended flute, stub and neck-relieved tools that get to a deep feature without the whole body rubbing on the way in.

Step tools

Step drills and step end mills that produce a hole, a counterbore and a chamfer in one plunge instead of three tools and three tool changes.

Form tools

The profile ground into the cutter, so the shape comes off the tool rather than out of a long interpolated toolpath. Radii, chamfers, undercuts and repeating profiles.

Custom geometry

Helix, flute count, corner radius, relief and coating chosen for the material and the operation instead of taken from whatever the standard tool happened to be.

Modified standards

Often the cheapest and fastest special of all: a stock tool altered to suit — shortened, necked, re-radiused or recoated.

Start with the cheapest special that solves it

Not every non-standard problem needs a tool made from scratch, and quoting one when a modification would do is how shops end up with expensive drawer ornaments. When you send a job over, we look at it in roughly this order:

Cross-reference a standardThe size exists — just not from the brand you looked at. We carry hundreds of lines, so the tool is often already on the shelf under a different part number.
Modify a standardThe stock tool is close. Shortening, necking down, adding a corner radius or changing the coating gets you there with less cost and less lead time than a ground-from-solid special.
Regrind to a specialYou already own tools that are near the target. In some cases a used tool can be reground into the geometry you actually need.
Build it to printThe geometry genuinely doesn’t exist, or the volume justifies a tool made for the job — form tools, multi-step tools, tight-tolerance work.

What to send with a custom request

A print is ideal, but plenty of specials get quoted from a clear description and a photo. The more of this we have, the closer the first quote lands.

The print, or the feature

A drawing, a sketch, a screenshot of the model, or a photo of the part with the problem circled. Whatever you have.

Material and condition

4140 at 32 HRC cuts nothing like Inconel or 6061. Material drives geometry, coating and, often, whether a special is needed at all.

The machine and holder

Spindle taper, available RPM, holder type and shank size. A perfect tool you can’t hold or can’t spin fast enough is no help.

Tolerance that matters

Which dimension is critical, and how critical. It separates a routine special from a tight-tolerance one.

Quantity and repeat

One tool for a one-off job, or a recurring part you’ll rerun quarterly. It changes what makes economic sense.

When you need it

Specials have lead time. Tell us the date and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s reachable or whether we should get you running on a workaround first.

When a special pays for itself

The tool costs more than a standard. That is the wrong number to compare. The one that matters is what the special removes from the job:

  • Operations eliminated. A step tool that replaces three tools removes two tool changes and two approach moves from every cycle. On a part you run in the hundreds, that is the whole justification by itself.
  • Setups eliminated. Reaching a feature in one setup instead of two removes a fixture, a re-indicate and a stack of tolerance error.
  • Scrap that stops. If a standard tool is chattering into a critical feature, the special isn’t buying speed, it’s buying parts you don’t throw away.
  • Cycle time on repeat work. A one-off part rarely justifies a special. A part that comes back every quarter for three years almost always does.

Custom tool questions

Do I need a CAD file or a formal drawing?

No. A dimensioned sketch, a photo of the part, or a clear description of the feature is enough to start. If you have a print or a model, send it — it speeds things up and removes guesswork — but nobody needs to draft a tool drawing to get a quote.

Can you match a special that another supplier used to make?

Usually. Send the old part number, the drawing if you have it, or the tool itself. Discontinued and orphaned specials — where the shop that made them is gone — are a common request, and it is the same work as a cross-reference with a manufacturing step on the end.

What is the minimum quantity?

It depends on the tool. Modified standards can make sense at one piece; ground-from-solid specials and form tools have setup cost that spreads better over a small batch. Tell us the quantity you actually want and we’ll quote that, plus the price break if going up in quantity changes the math.

How long do specials take?

It varies too much by tool type to publish a number we might miss. What we will do is give you a realistic lead time with the quote, and if it is too long for the job in front of you, propose a stock or modified tool to keep you cutting in the meantime.

Can specials be coated?

Yes — and they generally should be. We apply nine PVD coatings locally in Southern California, chosen for the material you’re cutting rather than defaulted.

Can specials be reground later?

Usually, and this is worth planning for at the design stage. If a tool is going to be a recurring cost, it’s better to build it so it can go through our regrinding service rather than be scrapped each time.
